Her mother died in childbirth, giving birth to a small child with eerie white eyes. She was ostracized from her tribe, even by her siblings and father (who did not even allow her to use her family name).

Eventually, she ran away at the young age of 8, wandering into a Doman village. They took her in, giving her a surname (Shinui) and training her to be a shinobi. She wanted – and still wants – to be a samurai, but did not feel she had the right to be, and so remains a ninja.

However, she was eventually allowed to serve Lady Yoruken no Yugao, and Alan may or may not have had a massive crush on her, swearing to protect her with her life. However, when Garlemald attacked to take over Doma, Lady Yugao was killed. Distraught and heartbroken, the 18 year-old Alan tried and failed to commit seppuku – she was found unconscious and nursed back to health, but as soon as she was better, she fled to Eorzea, buying and using a fantasia to disguise her Auri heritage from the foreigners who may be frightened of her.

She arrived in Ala Mhigo, and remained there for four years, until Garlemald attacked them as well. She fled into the Shroud, living among a Keeper settlement for five more years until she grew restless and traveled north to Coerthas. Despite her fear of the Ishgardians stemming from their hatred of Dravanians and scalekin, she remained in the highlands of Coerthas for ten more years, until the Battle of Carteneau.

She was badly wounded in the Calamity, and spent several years recovering and aiding the now-wintry Coerthas in rebuilding, before again growing restless and departing again, heading this time towards Ul’dah…
