Backstory:When I started FFXIV I created my character and pick my class, the one I chose was Pugilist, which to much of my excitement when joining the world of Eorzea was exactly as I imagined. Being able to kick ass and pull of moves half as good as Zell from FFVIII was amazing, even more so when you lvl the class and you become a Monk.
I've played one other MMO in which there were roles such as Tank, DPS and Healer and I've always gone for DPS, like I did starting this game, it's a role I'm used to, you follow the group, you the deal the damage, you kick ass. So when I decided to go for a "role" change it was pretty step for me, now I dabbled in the other classes didn't get em all up too high because I kept reverting back to my MNK (familiarity, you know how it is) so I never truely concentrated on a whole new role.
The Change:Stormblood is out and we have two new classes to grab and build up, with just one tiny issue that I see. . . both are DPS and we have a tons of DPS as it is. HW came out we got a new Tank class and Healer (FANTASTIC!) and another DPS. . . (maybe it's a ratio thing?)
Anyway my point we now have a whole lot more running around as DPS than we do Healer or Tank and people want to lvl these classes the're fun, in the new area whose not gonna wanna run around as a Samurai and be all Captain Algren in the The Last Samurai? or run around looking like a musketeer and surprise them with a shot of fire as a Red Mage. These classes are what people have been dieing for and due to this ques for getting into dungeons are insane, because everyone is their new class. So I decided to step out of my comfort zone and took up the role as Tank.
Learning The Basics:Now since I dabbled in all the classes from ARR and HW, I had three classes to choose from, Gladiator - which becomes your Paladin, Marauder - which becomes your Warrior and Dark Knight - which is a straight out job. I did The Hall of Novice on my DRK and started learning the basics of tanking with that class, ran through a few dungeons and did well, the rotation itself is pretty easy to grasp and once you get into the habit of remembering to check if Grit or Darkside is on your good.
SIDE TIP! If your going from DPS or Healer to Tank DO YOUR HALL OF NOVICE! learn your basic aggro grabbers. If I hadn't I would not have realized that Unmend is your Shield Lob/Tomahawk.Tanxiety! (It's a real thing):So I got my to 60 and got my gear to 270, I'm really getting the hang of it and working through it with my partner is so fun. However I noticed I panick a lot when I'm not with a friend or my partner and its a whole bunch of new people, I must seem like a total noob to them, I mess up my rotation, I lose aggro and generally in the end I have either the second Tank saving my ass or a DPS is doing it making me ultimately feel so much more worse and feel like I can't Tank.
Yet when I'm with my partner or a friend of mine, I don't mess up
(Ok yeah, sure I make the odd one or two mistakes, but I don't freak out or panick)
It's like I totally lose my ability to Tank, I got a little curious if anyone else had felt like this and it turns out. . . yeah I'm not the only one. Tanxiety exists.
I'm still trying to work through it and I seem to be slowly, I do way better when my partner is with me. ^.^
