Kiku's Fishing Guide Part 2

Public

Link to part 1 here

Part 2 of my fishing guide.
Time Limit:
1. You have a 50 minute time limit at any given fishing hole before you start getting the message "The fish sense something amiss". You will no longer be able to fish at the same spot until you reset the timer.
2. You can reset the timer by casting your line into another fishing hole. It doesn't matter if you catch anything or not at the other fishing hole, you can just cast and leave.
3. You can also reset the timer by casting into the same fishing hole as long as you move a certain distance away from your original spot. This only works if the fishing hole is large enough.
4. The timer starts after the first cast into the fishing hole. The timer continues its count even if you only cast once and leave the area. Leaving the area does NOT reset the counter for the time limit. If you plan on leaving and coming back to the same fishing hole, I recommend casting into another fishing hole to reset the timer before going back.

Fisher's Intuition:
1. Fisher's Intuition is a buff that enables certain fish to be caught. Like all other buffs, the effect of Fisher's Intuition is snapshotted at the time of the cast, which means that it can fall off while waiting for a bite and still have an effect.
2. Fisher's Intuition may require multiple varieties of fish to be caught before it activates. For example, the intuition for Problematicus is triggered after you catch 5 Granite Crabs and 3 Fossiltongues in total. When more than one type of fish is required, any of the fish can trigger the buff. If possible, you should try to catch the most difficult fish first in this case.
3. Any extra fish caught using Double Hook count towards Fisher's Intuition.
4. Any progress towards Fisher's Intuition will reset if either of the following occur:
a. You cast your line into another fishing hole in the same area.
b. You leave the area. Entering an instanced duty or logging out counts as leaving.
5. If Fisher's Intuition is up, any fish caught while the buff is up will not count towards the activation of the next Fisher's Intuition. This means that you shouldn't start counting fish until the first catch after Fisher's Intuition falls off. It's OK to start counting if the cast was during Fisher's Intuition, as long as the catch was after the buff dropped.
6. The game will play a special sound effect if Fisher's Intuition falls off while the targeted fish is on the line. For example, let's say that you have the Intuition for Little Leviathan on the Southern Strait of Merlthor route for Ocean Fishing. If you are waiting for a bite and the Intuition falls off without the special sound effect, then you know for sure that the fish that will bite on the current cast will not be Little Leviathan. You can use this information to decide whether or not you want to cancel the current cast.
7. Fisher's Intuition is not prematurely cancelled if you use Quit or move around after it procs.

Fish Eyes
1. Fish Eyes is an ability that lets you ignore the time requirement of a window. The weather requirement still applies.
2. Fish Eyes only works on fish in the ARR and Heavensward areas (with some notable exceptions). It has no effect on fish in Stormblood, Shadowbringers, and Ocean Fishing areas.

Identical Cast, Surface Slap:
1. These abilities have the opposite effect but serve a similar purpose: to allow you to manipulate your next catch. A key thing to note is that while you can only use these abilities within 15 seconds of a catch, the buff that they apply has no timer and will last until the next fish is hooked. The effect wears off after your next catch and must be reapplied.
2. If you ignore a bite by not hooking while either buff is up, you get to keep the effect of the buff.
3. A practical application of Surface Slap can be demonstrated in the following example: Let's say a fishing hole has fish A, B, and C. Fish A and B both have ! tugs with a similar catch time while fish C has a !! tug. If your goal is to catch as many of fish B as possible, you would only hook when you see a ! tug. Using Surface Slap after catching fish A makes it so that you know for sure that the next light tug will be for fish B, allowing you to use Double Hook without fear of getting the wrong fish and wasting your GP.
4. Surface Slap won't directly increase your chances of landing a bite of a big fish, but it can be used to indirectly gain more casts in a window if you use it to filter out a fish with a long bite time.
5. There's a small delay between the moment you press the Identical Cast button and when it actually takes effect. In my experience, I've had Identical Cast fail to produce the same fish by pressing Cast too quickly, so you may want to wait a split second after Identical Cast before using Cast.

Snagging:
1. The only things that require Snagging are "fish" that are fairly immobile or lack an obvious mouth. Think stuff like clams, oysters, mussels, coral, urchins, treasure maps, and the Magic Bucket for example. You don't need to turn it on for anything else. Using Snagging unnecessarily is at best, useless, and at worst, actively detrimental as you may be increasing the pool with unwanted fish.
2. There are absolutely no fish that require Snagging in Ocean Fishing.

Release / Release List:
1. Don't use this ability, it has an animation lock that will cost you time during fishing windows. Just throw away or desynthesize the fish later if you don't want to keep it. Keep plenty of free space in your inventory so that you'll never need it in the first place.

Chum:
1. You should be using this ability as much as possible when you don't need GP for anything else.
2. You can precast Chum in advance before a window starts and wait for your GP to regenerate back to full.

Other/Miscellaneous tips:
1. You can put the /sit emote on your hotbar by opening up the Emote menu and dragging the icon for Sit to your hotbar.
2. The three kinds of cordials (Watered Cordial, Cordial, and Hi-Cordial) have different cooldowns and therefore different GP per second ratios. Don't bother using the regular Cordial (HQ or NQ) as Hi-Cordial is strictly better in both the amount of GP restored and the cooldown duration. However, Watered Cordial has a shorter cooldown than Hi-Cordial, occasionally making it a better option on short windows. For example, HQ Watered Cordial's cooldown of 126 seconds is shorter than the duration of an extended Spectral Current (180 seconds), meaning that if you use a HQ Watered Cordial early in the extended Spectral Current, you can still have time to use a Hi-Cordial later on. This can net you an extra Double Hook.
4. Use a stopwatch to time how long it takes for a specific fish to bite. You can use a smartphone or online app.
5. You can create a macro for Cast that prints out the time elapsed in your chat window as an alternative to using a stopwatch.
6. It is possible to use self buffs such as Chum without having to Cast first.

Good online resources:
1. FFX|V Fish Tracker App (https://ff14fish.carbuncleplushy.com/)
In my opinion, the best fish tracker available right now in terms of feature set and ease of use. The maintainer is very quick to update the site when new fish are released.
2. Fisherman's Horizon Discord Server ( https://discord.gg/NG2tDNt )
A community Discord server where English speaking players share information. You will need to use Discord to access this resource, but it is very much worth it for real-time updates on fishing windows after new fish are released.
3. Ocean Fishing (https://ffxiv.pf-n.co/ocean-fishing)
This site shows the Ocean Fishing schedule and if you set it to "Show all fish", it lists each area's fish along with their preferred bait, bite time ranges, point value, Double Hook amount, and Weather/Time availability. Extremely helpful for Ocean Fishing.
4. FFXIV Teamcraft (https://ffxivteamcraft.com/)
Teamcraft added support for fishing holes a while back. While the fishing features of the site had some usability issues at the start, updates have gradually improved the experience. It's starting to look like a decent replacement for Cat Became Hungry, it just needs to support user comments and reduce the server response time.
5. FFXIV Weather Forecast (https://kikuflare.github.io/FFXIV-Weather-Forecast/index.html)
Full disclosure, I am the creator of this weather forecasting tool. I made it because existing weather forecasting tools hadn't been updated for areas released in Shadowbringers back when I first developed it in 2019. You can use this tool to look up when the next few windows for an area will be.

This is the end of my fishing guide. Thanks for reading and good luck to all the fishers out there!

A question about the intuition buff, I am trying to get my hands on the warden of the seven hues, so i have my 5 green, 3 indigo, and 2 of my firelight, waiting on the third, now while its up i should chum i assume and fish my butt off, when it falls off however, the buff, do i need to re-catch everything? or just one set, say 3 indigo, and it will kick back in?

Hi Zenis, each instance of Fisher's Intuition requires all conditions to be fulfilled regardless of whether or not you activated it before. So to answer your question, yes, you will have to catch 5 green, 3 indigo and 3 firelight again to reactivate Fisher's Intuition.

There's an error in the information for Fish Eyes (or the behavior was changed since this was originally written). Fish Eyes most certainly has an effect on (some) Stormblood fish. It's how I managed to finally catch The Vegetarian at Hell's Lid.

I haven't updated this guide in quite some time, that's why some info may be outdated. The point regarding Fish Eyes was true when this guide was last updated, as per the Patch 5.4 Notes:
