Today I was doing my daily main story roulette to get some tomestones like I do every morning and was thrown into The Praetorium. Nothing out of the ordinary when we first started. Zipped through the trash like normal since you don't really need to get stuck fighting them. It wasn't until we got to the second set of trash that you actually have to fight that I noticed that something was wrong.
I'm not sure if our tanks were new to tanking or such, but in plain terms both of our tanks really stunk! Between an AST a SAM and me as a SMN we were doing all the pulls and holding all the aggro. When it got to the first boss fight I tanked the entire boss fight as a SMN. Second boss fight with Nero me and the AST tanked switched off between tanking. Same thing when it got to Gaius. Me and the AST switched between tanking.
When we got to the Ultimate Weapon, me and a SAM alternating tanking. Not once did either one of the tanks produce enough aggro to pull any of the bosses or even the trash. I wanted to ask so bad what was going on with the tanks, or if they needed any help but no one else wanted to mention it either, and we seemed to be doing fine without them. I don't understand why neither tanks would mention anything though. I mean if you're new to tanking or just trying to get practice in because you are bad at tanking, you should really speak up! I'd speak up especially if I wasn't doing my part, either asking for help or trying to get an answer for what I'm doing wrong.
When I started off as a healer, I was awful. I really had no idea what I was doing and was basically told keep tank alive. Well I would but basically at the cost of my own life and everyone else's. I started running with mentors, and friends and my FC and I got noticeably better. I do well as a healer until I get to the level 70 dungeons, then I struggle immensely. But I at least let the party know that I was new, not good and had never run the dungeon before if I hadn't run it. We died a lot less when I happened to speak up and I got a lot of help and feedback that way.
The other thing I wanted to say is Weegee Alan from Jenova and Alph Stormwyrm from Cactuar the AST and the SAM... you guys are AWESOME! Thought they needed a shoutout because even though we didn't really struggle, you really have to change your stratagem when a dps or a healer has to tank. I actually considered trying out a tank class because it was kind of fun tanking for a little bit. And if I can tank as a SMN I can definitely tank as an actually tank class right? Better not push my luck though ^_^

Tanking is hands down the easiest class to perform at a high level. You should give it a try, especially come 5.0 with the tank changes.
I really want to try DRK. I've seen them do amazing things on level 70 dungeons. Once the rest of us got wiped on the Drowned City of Skalla about a quarter of the way through the last boss. The tank who was a DRK beat him solo it was amazing to watch
