The repetitious nature of doing harder stuff

Public

As I continue to do the harder things in the game, I have noticed something. Many of the mechanics are rather repetitious.

If you think about it, this is not surprising. It can be hard devising new things for the enemies to do, so the developers recycle previous mechanics in slightly different ways. But to deal with them one just does the same things one did before, just with a minor variation sometimes.

What I am getting at is, the more experience you have with doing harder stuff, the easier new stuff actually is because you have already seen some of what the new fight does and know how to deal with it. This is why skilled people clear quickly, they already know how to handle a lot of it because they have seen it many times before.

As I progress in the MINE fights for both primals and Coils, I am seeing examples of this over and over again. Mechanics I have seen in newer fights show up in older fights, so I can see where they originally came from. Plus, since I have cleared those newer fights properly, I know how to DO those original mechanics, which makes doing those older fights at MINE level much easier.

What is interesting though is that the Coils fight mechanics I have not really seen repeated in primal fights very much. They mostly seem to be original and not reused. Now I could be wrong and they might have shown up in things like savage raids, but of course, I have not done those.

See, if you are just starting out on hard stuff and attempting them, all those mechanics will be new to you because you will not have seem them in normal stuff or if you had, they were watered down versions of them. So all of it is VERY confusing and terribly difficult, believe me I KNOW!!!! ;p

But each one you conquer, each one you clear; gives you more and more experience with how things work. When you do enough of them you will start to see repeats of things, and then you will go; "oh, this is like that other one, I know what to do!" And then it will be an easy clear for you, well as long as the others in your party are somewhat competent too. ;-)

I never did Coils of Bahamut, but I have heard that many mechanics from it are reused. In particular, some from the later floors even made it into casual content.

The attacks used by dragons such as Nidhogg and Midgardsormr - Akh Morn, Akh Rhai and Morn Afah - supposedly all come from there.

Others were used in various places, for example one of the boss has an attack called "Twisters", the same mechanic was reused with a different animation as E5S's Stepped Leader.

Allagan Rot, where you have to pass a debuff to your party members to avoid being killed by it, is also present in various high-end content, although I haven't done it myself.

Most famously, Nael van Darnus's attacks, Lunar Dynamo (donut) and Iron Chariot (circle) are widely used in content of all levels. If you see raid guids mention chariot/dynamo, that's what they're talking about - a mechanic where you have to look at some clue and determine if the boss is casting a donut or circle!

I also heard that the entire concept of stack markers, where you have to stand with your party members to share damage, originated in the Coils of Bahamut. Although at the time, there was not the universal stack marker with 5 arrows that we are familiar with today.

I am sure you are right Sig, I have not done all the Coils yet, so I may see more stuff that I have seen before.

I am not surprised that they are reused though, some of the mechanics in Coils are actually pretty neat like Melsuine's gazes. It would have been a shame to have them go to waste.

I will see Nael next week since he is T9. We'll see how I do. ;p

I really enjoy your raiding story. I suppose it is because I can relate to them. The old raiding contents are fun. I only sub during HW, so I wasn't familiar with the coil. I did do some of them on my free trial account. Although some of the mechanics are similar, I often get caught offguard and respond too late.
