Annabel's Rant: Lack of caring
Yeah, I know, I'm at it again. MY Blog people! And anyway, I KNOW you are READING it because it's BITCHING! ;p
Sigh, yes people, those God awful forums are at it AGAIN! Why oh WHY do I READ them?
The latest annoyance, someone posts that they don't like the constant big pulls in dungeons and wished that tanks could tone it down some.
This incited MUCH bloodlust from the Rabid Forum Fans, who promptly pounced and bitched, moaned, AND complained that the fool needed to think about people's time and NOT waste it! Also, there was the whole Get GOOD and ADJUST stuff thrown in for good measure.
This pretty much just made me go WTF? I mean, REALLY? WOW!
Let me get this straight, you want the one who posted the complaint, plus ANY others who might also have the same complaint to be CONSIDERATE about YOUR oh so VALUABLE time, BUT....you care NOTHING about being, well I don't know,....C-O-N-S-I-D-E-R-A-T-E, about their being uncomfortable with large pulls and MAYBE toning it down a tad!
Seriously people, do you lead SO much of a antisocial life sitting in your dark little computer hidey-hole forgotten by the world that you CAN'T understand the concepts of Consideration and Compromise?
Would it REALLY kill you to maybe WORK OUT something? Maybe pull half of the things you would usually do if someone ASKS? It would add what? 5-10 minutes to the run? Like you would even miss THAT Mr. 20-40 hour a week game player. And if you are one of those who really DON'T have much time to play...then WHY in the hell did you pick a MAJOR time sucking MMORPG?
I just LOVE how people want others to think of THEIR needs and wants while completely IGNORING other people who might ACTUALLY have some themselves. Such an incredibly bunch of callous jerks, but what does one expect of the current generation of people so self centered, think of themselves attitudes.
I know not everyone is LIKE that. There are some good people out there who DO actually practice consideration and compromise, as well as courtesy. But, more and more it seems it is a dying art, and that's a real shame. It makes the game not much fun to play for those who are true casuals and are not so intensely into it. It also causes them to quit out of frustration because they have people like THAT berate them for a reasonable request.
Personally, I think a slightly slower dungeon run time is WELL worth the goodwill that comes from making others feel comfortable with the run, time be damned.
And anyway, if that 5-10-15 minutes is THAT important to you, maybe you should look at your OWN life and where you are going wrong with managing your time that it means THAT much to you. I guarantee you waste more than that in everyday pointless things you do.
And here I thought I was only pulling to much because everyone was demanding it. How silly of me for giving into pressure!
Yes Esper, at times people DO want that, and that is fine when everyone is good with it.
But, when you go into a roulettes with random people, you are going to get people new to jobs, new to the game, and new to dungeons, and uncomfortable with handling big pulls.
This is why to try and listen if someone IS and maybe help them out by adjusting somewhat. It's A LOT easier to pull less then for them to miraculously get good at their job then and there. ;-)
Written during my lunch break:
Yeah, I saw that forum too. It really brought back the WoW forums flashbacks, where arrogance practically scaled with gear and experience, especially when that game had no ilvl sync and heirlooms (gear that works like Aetheryte earrings, gives XP boost and stats scale with your level). One of the biggest reasons I quit playing that game. All I can say otherwise is: Thank god for trusts (and maybe one day, Eureka Shadowbringers).
I'm going hardcore all day every day, you better handle this wagon I'm draggin' cuz this train ain't making no stops, we fightin' Artorias on the Anor Londo two archer bridge, so git gud or get gone, the only wipes allowed here are your booty from clenching at the optimal pulls, gonna school you in how to play this game the right way. I don't pay your sub? plz... I be carrying your from Sastasha to Cosmos, we don't walk, we run, so put on dem min ilv boots and let's hit the pavement, you feel?
Ugh, tell me about it Joe, being WOW, I can just IMAGINE how it must have been.
'Arrogance scaling with Experience', it's sooo true. Power makes normally good people asshats and enhances those who were asshats already even more. Just because you are good NOW does not mean you can't help the others who are still on the road to getting there.
Oh Ronove, you are just TOO Leet for little ol' me. ;-)
I have no interest in those forums and think the quality of discussion there is poor. It just seems to attract the worst kinds of people from both sides of the spectrum.
To me, the whole drama seems overblown. The original request in your words, that is to ask the tank to slow down if you are uncomfortable, feels reasonable to me. If you are not comfortable, just talk to your tank.
I default to a fast pace, but when playing with strangers I have a macro to say I will be going fast, and to tell me to slow down if needed. Even if the healer says nothing, I am evaluating them and seeing if it is needed to slow down.
Interestingly, very few healers asked me to pull less (I cannot remember when the last one was). I think that when you show you are taking their opinion into consideration, most healers are at least willing to try things out for a pull or two to see how it goes.
Personally, I prefer large pulls only because it is more challenging, and time is only a small factor. For me, the difference is not between a dungeon that lasts 15 min and 25 min; it is the difference between 15 min of fun or no fun at all. And the purpose of playing a game is fun.
Of course, I am not going to leave randomly, nor call anyone trash. However, please consider before making such a request, and if you have any ability at all to handle multiple groups, please be willing to try.
After all, the way to overcome anxiety is to be exposed to the source of anxiety in a safe, supportive environment, and I think I can help with that. I feel that it can be empowering to see what you can handle with a tank who mitigates and positions well.
We can adjust if it does not work for whatever reason, and I am not going to rage at anyone.
Though, there is one thing I disagree with in your post, which is this implication that casuals are angels of consideration and compromise suffering at the hands of the evil, elitist hardcore players. And what's up with the term "true casuals"? Come on Anna, I expected better of you. This just seems like MMO tribalism to me.
Casual players are just as likely to be arrogant and selfish as hardcore ones. In fact, sometimes it is those who are most lacking in skill and knowledge, who seek to put down others as a quick means of propping up their ego. For example, some who prefer small pulls attempt to portray their preference as the "right" or "intended" way to play, insinuating that other players are "playing the game wrongly".
Some players refuse to handle large pulls under any circumstances, which IMO is the same as always insisting to pull to the next wall. When we go into DF, there is no guarantee that the party will want to play at our pace. Just as we cannot expect every party to be ready for a speedrun, we also cannot expect every party to go at a slow and relaxing pace. Hence, it's prudent to be willing to step out of your comfort zone every now and then.
I still wonder why this is even a subject of discussion ( big pulls )
Either do like Sig does: "Hi I'm pulling every freaking thing unless you tell me different, you good?"
Or you do like I do: Pull everything, goes well, healer makes no comments I keep going. We wipe, or healer appears stressed, I go lighter. If I"m Comm fishing Sig's wins, but both do the same thing.
As for society ME ME ME..just drive to work Anna. People in traffic driving down the shoulder. Entitlement is the norm Anna.
It pretty much comes down to people can be selfish AND self centered no matter WHAT your level. You just have to try and be better than that and be aware you are doing it.
Oh silly Lolo, I have not commuted in many YEARS, I literally work from my bed at night. ;p But I DO remember seeing stuff like that when I did.
