Day 57 Part 2: Sweet Revenge (with a little help)

Public

Part 2:

Those moments proved to be costly ones for the spent healer; for behind in the whirling landscape, she heard a roar and a cry of anguish. Turning to look, she saw the body of the Paladin Logan sprawled, half sunk in the sands as the whirlpool disappeared as fast as it had come. "No!" Annabel cried out in despair, seeing her nightmare coming true once more. "I won't let you have him;" she said screaming at the creature in a voice filled with both rage and anguish.

Annabel struggled to move her tired limbs through the sand, trying to get herself into position to cast her Raise spell before it was too late to be of any use. She was only faintly aware of Aria and Peck who were doing all they could to keep the Sandworm focused on them and not Annabel. Finally she was there, just close enough to cast the spell, and she started her cast, concentrating fully on the spell and little else.

Not realizing what the worm had done, Annabel was caught fully unaware as the beast erupted out of the sand from below, once more slamming into her, sending Annabel's body flying through the air. The young woman's surprised scream was cut off as she slammed into the ground, body sprawled and lifeless. In the second or two left of consciousness, Annabel saw the two remaining members of their party struggling hopelessly against the worm seeing one fall, and then everything went black.

Bright light flared in Annabel’s eyes and she cried out in panic as she jerked to consciousness. “Easy Lass easy,” Logan said trying to calm her. “You’re alright.” Annabel rose with his help and looked around. The other members of the group were there in various states. It seemed like they had been lucky once more that this strange rebirth had worked. But how long would it continue; when would be the day it...didn’t?

Despair welled up in Annabel and she fell to her knees. “Not again,” she said her voice full of defeat. “I failed..I..I..let you all die, again.” Sobs came from her as she started crying, unable to control herself. Aria rushed over to put her arm around the crying young woman. “It’s ok dear, it’s not your fault, it isn’t, ok?” Annabel shook her head negatively, “but it is Aria, it is! You rely on me to keep you alive, to make sure you don’t fall, and I..I couldn’t do it, couldn’t keep up.” More sobs came from her, heavier than before shaking her slim body. “Alea’s right, I am a bad healer, bad at everything I try to do; I need to stop, stop before someone dies for good!”

“Stop?” Peck’s high voice rang out into the cavern entrance. “Stop? By the Twelve, are you kidding me? I just got my butt kicked by ‘Fishing Bait’ and there’s no way I’m going to let this go! Could you imagine what Cocobuki and the others back at the guild would say to me if they heard what happened? I want revenge!!!!” This last part he said flaring magical fire from his hands up in the air.

“Aye Lass,” Logan agreed, “I’m with our fiery friend here. I can’t go back to my Order saying that a worm beat me. The other Knights would have me a laughingstock for weeks. Plus I can only imagine what duties they would put me on.”

“And don’t forget me,” Aria pointed to herself. “If the Elzen ever found out, I surely would be kicked out of the archery guild or be made fun of for months and made never to forget how better they are with a bow. How could you put your friend through that Anna?”

Annabel looked at them surprised. “But...But, you could die again, why would you put yourself through that risk?”

The others were quick with answers.

“Honor,” said Logan with pride.

“Revenge,” yelled Peck with desire.

“To show my friend she can do it,” Aria said with compassion smiling at Annabel, “and also what the other two said”, she added shrugging.

Annabel blinked the tears from her eyes and looked at each of the others in turn. They were all crazy fools, but it seemed they still believed they could do this, and believed in her. Well it was high time to start believing in herself. Picking herself off the ground, she stood up, shaky at first but soon stood erect and sure. “Ok, if you all want to do this I’m with you, but what happens if this happens again,” she asked. “I guess we end up back here,” Peck said uncaring, “and make this annoying walk again; well you will at least, I’m getting the big guy to carry me.”

After a long walk back through the twisty sand filled passages, they soon returned to their destination once more looking at the foul worm. Surprisingly it looked little worse for wear other than a few arrows still stuck between the ridges of its outer segments. “Damn,” Peck said, “I was hoping it would have been more wounded. Looks like it’s going to be a nasty fight again. But,” he added in an eager tone, “That just makes it more fun!”

Aria just shook her head in response to this and turned to Annabel who was silently watching the creature move through the sand. “Be strong my friend, it will be ok, we can do this.”

“Chin up Lass!” Logan added, “Soon this beast will be but a memory and we’ll sing songs of our deeds at the tavern.”

Annabel, knowing that if she hesitated any more she would not have the courage to continue, gave the acknowledgement she was ready. As one, the group dropped down into the pit and the battle was on.

Not wasting any time, Logan got the Sandworm's attention, its maw once more trying to tear into him. Peck and Aria kept up a constant barrage of attacks that tore into its hide, causing blood to flow down its sides. Annabel kept spell after healing spell leaping from her staff to flow into the others, not hesitating for a second for fear of it being a second too late.

As expected, the worm soon did its trick and burrowed under the sand, but this time the group was alert and ready for this as they stopped what they were doing and scrambled for the nearby rocks for protection. Annabel though concentrated on her healing one second too much and once more found herself the foul beast's target as it slammed into her, knocking the wind out of her lungs as she fell to the ground. This time though, her regeneration spell was in action, which saved her from the worst of it and allowed her to recover quickly.

By now the creature was in a frenzy, mad with pain trying to escape. It once more dove beneath the sand, once more creating the whirlpool of deadly sand. But Annabel and the others were ready for this too and this time no one was caught in the Worms’ foul trap. Annabel felt fatigue wearing on her, but hope kept her going. They were still up, still alive, and she could swear that the thing was growing slower.

“Keep it up!” Peck screamed over the sounds of battle. “We almost got it!” Annabel saw that Logan was battered and bruised, his once gleaming armor dinged and dented, shield twisted and bowed. She didn’t know how he kept going but go on he did, for the party, for her. Spells flew from Annabel to Logan, to Peck, to Aria, who was singing with both her voice and her bow, not letting up, not daring to pause a breath. Annabel herself was tired, sooo tired. But she was also tired of failing, of being thought of as a useless Blonde idiot, not good for anything other than looking pretty. Well she was pretty now, pretty useful at keeping the others alive.

With a final roar of pain, the giant beast collapsed causing the sand to spray in a cloud as it hit the ground and fell silent. Moments passed as the group just tried to catch its breath, fatigued as they were. Then there was a whoop from Peck, a cry of joy from Aria, and a hearty laugh of triumph from Logan as they all realized they had done it, they had beaten the beast.

Annabel, too stunned for words or much else, fell to her knees in the sand and wept openly, tears streaming from her eyes. The others came up to her concerned. “What’s wrong Anna,” Aria said with a worried look on her face; “Are you hurt?” Annabel looked at her friend and smiled, blinking away tears. “I did it Aria, I did it, By the Twelve, I did it!” To the surprise of the others, she gave a gay laugh and whooped with joy, still crying. But they knew now that this was joy, not pain or despair, and they whooped along with her, celebrating their hard won victory over the deadly Sandworm.

After a while the sounds of joy died down and the four took a moment to rest and get back their strength. Annabel sat deep in thought, thinking about all she had been through and how she had gotten through it. Her sisters would never believe that their flighty middle sister, embarrassment of the family, could have done this. Well she did, and would do more in the future in this strange land they called Ezorea; with its deserts and forests; coasts and dungeons. By herself and with some help, she would do it.

“Well this was all fun and all," Peck said interrupting her thoughts, “but we still need to get through this place.”

“Aye”, Aria said agreeing, “And don’t forget all that treasure just waiting for us to grab, right Anna dear?”

Annabel smiled at her friends’ teasing, “Oh? I think you mean crafting goods for yourself dear, but a few nice baubles never hurt anyone.” She gave a wink at that. Logan and Peck just looked at each other and shook their heads as they both rolled their eyes.

“Ok Ladies and Peck,” Logan said, hefting his shield, “let’s head out and finish this.”

Annabel nodded, her smile cheering up everyone else in the room. “As Peck would say, Let’s go FRY THEM UP!

Oh what was really tough was that Worm would come up on me every time he would reappear, ignoring everyone else. I think I really must have been wearing Ode de' worm perfume or something. Oh and I pretty much skipped the other bosses since the story was about the worm, but there really wasn't much to write, we did far better on them.

Admit it, you just want to get in one of my stories. LOL
