Reviewing Yorha Dark Apocalypse

Public
Note: I find myself wanting to express my opinions on several topics and I think this is the place to be. My opinions are personal thoughts (and are not a critique), which I am not claiming to be right nor wrong. I am not expecting comments, otherwise I would have went to the official forum. In the event that there would be, I honor and respect everybody else’s opinion, though I’d prefer a healthy conversation over that of a heated debate.

Some Current Opinion(s):
Some FFXIV players believe that Shadowbringers 24-man Alliance RAID series is a disappointment and was more of a fan service.

Rasler’s Opinion:
From the very start I’ve always expected this raid series to be a fan service. I waited until patch 5.5 to experience the whole content before giving my opinion.

The story is lacking. It ended abruptly leaving the player thinking “is that it?” I think there should be more. Majority of players didn’t like that the story wasn’t attached to the FFXIV lore much like its predecessor Return to Ivalice. For me, it would have been nice if the story was incorporated to the lore, but not a big issue that it did not. I think the idea of not liking the content based solely on the story not incorporated to the lore does not give justice to this set of raids. There are other MMOs out there that releases content not related to the story. FFXIV players were just so accustomed to the idea that all content must be attached to the story that a deviation gets a negative criticism.

I like it that there were a few quests in between releases (patches 5.2 and 5.4). I like it too that there is still something to do after it has completed. I just hope this weekly quest would to a more satisfying conclusion.

For the gameplay and mechanics, there were a majority of good implementations in each of the raids. Though the “go to center” and “go to the side” mechanic has been overly abused. The other fight that underwhelmed me was the elevator fight, which was fantastic in Nier Automata.

The soundtrack is fantastic, especially Weight of the World Prelude. The aesthetic of the Portable Archive gives plus points too.

It’s not the best alliance raid series for me (personally that still belongs to Return to Ivalice) but I don’t think Yorha Dark Apocalypse is bad. It’s good but not great.

It's funny, so many think the Ivalice rids were good because of the overabundance of past Final Fantasy stuff in it from various games. I heard MANY FF fanboys just squeal with delight and point out every little detail the raids had in them from old games.

Admittedly, the fights themselves were not bad, half decent actually. I just didn't really care about the story or lore.

But yes, the End of Nier was a letdown. It actually felt like a anime who started good but really sucked at the end.

Yes, I can't blame the fanboys out there. I played FFT and FF12 and I was happy with the Ivalice raids, and with an ending that was a very good alternative than the original. I actually prefer the FF14 ending. Though I didn't like it just because of the story, the gampeplay was impressive. I still have nightmares about Hashmal.

I just really think lore tying to the MSQ shouldn't be the sole basis of liking or not the content.
